Established by the Boy Scouts of America, the Distinguished Citizen Award recognizes noteworthy and extraordinary leadership of citizens in communities across the United States. Honoring distinguished citizens puts into place guideposts that serve to inspire our youth to lead, to accept responsibility, and to care about the principles and causes beyond self-interest.

Notable recipients of this award have included, Mayor Michael Duggan, Roger Penske, Peter Karmanos, and Dave Bing. Recipients are chosen for their outstanding community service as evidenced by the interest and leadership given to many worthwhile organizations as well as the respect and esteem in which they are held by their colleagues. The Boy Scouts of America has honored many of the leading corporate and community leaders of the Detroit Area with the Distinguished Citizen Award. This annual event raises awareness for Scouting as well as necessary funds to serve over 25,000 youth in our community with lessons in character development, leadership and physical fitness.
